Telling Stories-The Love Jones Episode

Last month I had the pleasure and the honor to participate in the Telling Stories Love Jones Zoom hosted by my Spelman sis, the lovely Miss Diana Vega. I told the story of how me and the Mister came to live in our own little Happily Ever After. You can find the video here. I come in around the 44 minute mark. OR you can just read it for yourself here. Enjoy!

New York City. Fall 2000.

I had just moved here from Atlanta for grad school.

I am not from Atlanta but was willing to give NYC as least as long as I had given ATL.  I had VERY early 2000 dreams of what moving here would be like. I dreamed of meeting a Black male artist that was as practical as he was creative.  we’d live in Brooklyn (of course) brunching on weekends while sharing The NYTimes and talking about EVERYTHING.

My homegirl from undergrad and I were invited to a party so we got gussied up and went. The Event was in a dope space somewhere near Chinatown but not quite IN Chinatown. They played the cult classic Faster Pussycat, Kill, KILL on the walls and HipHop on the speakers. I sat at a table on the upper level people watching and making up stories about the folks I observed when I saw him.

He looked up at me JUST as My eyes landed on him. He has the most piercing stare I have EVER seen. it’s damn near lupine and chile, I certainly was ready to be Little Red to his Big Bad Wolf! He was the most beautiful man I had ever laid my eyes on. I’m far from religious, but He looked like Black Jesus. He had locs that were as long as my legs….i wondered how they would feel on my thighs.

I had to figure out how to talk to him. I scurried downstairs from THE UPPER ROOOM & spent the last few minutes of the party eye fucking him before it was time to go.... We didn’ t speak that night but since he was one of the event promoters. I swore to myself and the baby Black Jesuses I knew we would one day have that I would be back at this party as often as I had to be to make him mine.

My second time at the partay I ain’ t waste no time. My homegirl and I pregamed in my dorm room so I had plenty of liquid courage coursing through my veins. I batted my eyes at him until we found ourselves sitting on a banquette together and talking for the ENTIRE night. I told him I was a writer. He told me that he was an independent Hip Hop artist.

Remember that daydream I had about what I hoped to find in NYC? As we talked I heard that Quincy Jones song Septembro playing in my head. Being a Drama major, EVERYTHING  in my life has a soundtrack.

In that darkly lit lounge at a party hosted by Brand Nubian, I saw my future with this Brooklyn born and bred MC. I think I hooked him the moment I referenced how Lord Jamaar had the worst death on the show OZ. “How wack is it to die in jail from eating eggs?”

We exchanged 2way info that night.

What followed was a rollercoaster of a courtship that felt like it spanned decades but really was barely only a year.

NYC Nightlife was our playground. He had to work and we HAD to see each other. I scheduled all of my spring semester classes after 12pm so that I could be out with him until dawn.

SO many dark overproof nights spent in darker clubs pressing each other pressing against speakers until the rhythm of the music and our heartbeats were one and the same. If he dared not pay attention to me, I would tickle his ears with his locs. Before we parted I’d tie the ends in knots. He called them forget-me-knots.

We were legos who just fit together no matter how we were placed. Like magnets whose pull was so strong NOTHING could get between us. We were madly, wildly, passionately in love. Our arguments were mercurial. Our making up celestial. We could have been the Hip Hop version of La Boheme, or Rent; in lieu of a terminal illness, one of us had an entanglement elsewhere. The other one of us thought we could live with it, but ultimately we parted ways in an ugly fashion.

And then....

Radio silence.

2004 Valentine’s Day I went to Club Cheetah. it was one that held MANY memories from our time together. I wasn’t surprised when I saw him. We chatted, closely.  Having been in my cups for hours, I got my Mae West on &  invited him to come on up & see me later. He accepted my invitation then had second thoughts and went home instead..

2006 I was out with a seat-filler, (you know, someone who isn’t REALLY who you want to be with but in the words of Zora, will do in case of a rush, or until something better comes along.) Out of the corner of my eye, I saw him. It was a quick glance but I knew it was him. I averted my eyes and walked past as if he were anyone else on a bustling train platform. I was trying to give the lame I was with a chance. As we passed, something electric charged through me and my breath caught. I felt him stop a few paces behind me clearly feeling the same, yet neither of us spoke.

For years we continued to bump into each other OFTEN in the most random of places. We could fill a whole page of Missed Connections with our encounters. The universe knows what you need even if you are too foolish to realize it.

December 3rd, 2014 my younger brother died suddenly. my love found out and reached out to offer his condolences.

6months later, he lost his best friend suddenly. June to November 2015 we chatted on messenger sorta like a small support group of only 2. On Veteran’s Day we met for dinner/drinks. When we first got there it was awkward. somewhere between round 2 and 3 of margaritas damn near 15 years evaporated and like no time had passed, we were back.

We made up for lost time QUICKLY. doing anything else felt unnatural.

It wasn’t ever a conversation about IF we were going to get married, but WHEN. We picked the palindrome August 18th, 2018 because it contains 3 infinity signs; for the past, present, and future lifetimes we loved or would love each other in. We got engaged at the top of the Empire State Building in October of 2017 and a month later we were pregnant. When we found out we were having a girl, he beamed and said “Baby, we are having another you!” It doesn’t get much more #girldad than that.

July 2018 we welcomed our baby Lola into our lives. 5 weeks later On 8-18-18, better known as THE hottest day in tarnation, we got married on the Brooklyn Bridge with a New Orleans Brass Band as our processional music.

I dreamed my husband up. Through some miracle I was lucky enough to discover that the man of my dreams not only existed, but dreamed me up as I did him. He is my partner, my lobster, my best friend. We trust each other wholeheartedly and without reservation. We can communicate whole sentences with just a glance. We make each other laugh like no one else can and love nothing more than piling up in our home with our two and four legged toddlers eating good and listening to music. We are living the life we BOTH always dreamed.

#020614: The Grey Area

I think this is inspired by Singles Awareness Day being next week. I'll decide if it's a good idea or not later. Too hungover right now to know now.

It could all be so simple, but you'd rather make it hard....

I lack the energy to follow all the rules in this dating game. Double speak exhausts and bores me in a way you can't even begin to fathom.  I'm not talking about the chase.  I enjoy being pursued and more than that being caught. But the other antics strike me as sooooo juvenile and therefore beneath me at my ripe old age of too-old-for-that-shit. I know 'Pac said, I don't want it if it's that easy, but is the converse that it has to be THAT hard?

So when dudes keep talking about how they don't want a relationship, yet clamor for all the perks of a relationship, I can't help but roll my eyes, HARD.  Last I checked, we were grown and grown people are allowed to have relationships of different types. There's a whole spectrum of titles between friends and spouse that we, dating grown folks can explore, yet it seems that dudes only know three: friend, bedfellow, spouse. I don't know if these are new dating regulations that were released while I was being made an honest woman, but I did not get these notes in my remedial dating class and as a result often find myself in some relationship gray area that is neither only lover but not quite significant other.

I'm a Virgo, I compartmentalize EVERYTHING. I'm cool with having a lover, matter of fact I LOVE having lovers, as long as said lover remains in the lover lane and doesn't overstep by doing boyfriend-y stuff.  That's when I get confused and that's when the grey area starts. If you're going to do boyfriend-y stuff from the lover lane, then why not take the plunge and be the BF? What makes it even more of a conundrum for me is that WITHOUT FAIL, the moment that the relationship averse gentlemen of afore mention wake up and decide that they are possibly trying to wife me is usually when I am officially over it.  Not over it the way many of us say when we really aren't and are being emotionally dishonest, but for real over it.  How long can I be expected to exist in these gray areas?

When a dude tells me he doesn't want to or can't be in a relationship, I give it a little bit more of the old college try. "Why?" you ask, because for much of my life, I've been the Ferrari of love; racing from zero to head-over-heels in ten seconds flat. But once I've tried to be patient, and things remain in the same undergraduate style holding pattern, I'm going to start to peruse my other options, because there are ALWAYS other options. *shrugs*

Usually, it's around the time that I get ghost (aka "I've been REALLY busy.") or when I stop responding to your text messages in a timely or interested fashion THAT'S when they decide they want me.  Not when I'm whipping up red velvet waffles for morning-after-breakfast or coping thoughtful birthday presents, or doing my best impersonation of a porn star. Naw. All that lady in the streets/freak in the bed talent is wasted. It's when I'm aloof and distant that suddenly I'm desirable.

A former "prayer partner" (shout out to @theXDExperience for that phrase that pays) once said that I do too much and in doing so, set the bar too high for it to ever be reciprocal. Soooo, basically, I should be less thoughtful and it will be easier for dudes to want me? I have to act like I don't like you so that you will like me?

What type of illogic is that?
Why go through all the machinations?
Why go through all that trouble?
Why play these games of tug-of-war with each other's heart strings?
Why not just want me when I want you?

I mean, even when I'm not being the Ferrari of love and I'm waiting and pacing myself and giving things the chance to blossom and bloom organically, even that has a limited shel life after 30. By about 3 months, you should know whether you want me or not.  If you do and you can't/won't join me in my quest for our happily ever after, then kick rocks quietly and get out of the way so someone else can join me on my quest. I mean, 3 months....that's 3 period cycles.  It would be nice if men could decide if they want me or not before the second trimester of our relationship. Excuse me, our label-less relationship, small "r." I don't even really care about the label or proximity as much as I care about fidelity.  Then again, maybe that's just residuals of my last major Relationship, capital "R."

Lemme go try to sneak a disco nap under my desk real quick....
SMOOCHES!!!
Shine on!

#051111 Recycling

I wanted to know.
I needed to know.

There is something to be said about someone who knows exactly when and how to touch you. Then again, when you've had over a decade's worth of touches, is it a testament to someone's skill or their ability to adapt to routine?
Was it availability or desire that kept us boomeranging towards each other?
It was easy to get lost in him.
There was so little offered, I could imagine or make up the rest.
I invented a world between us and he did not protest.

He always knew just where to put his hands.

Much to my dismay,
he ALWAYS knew just where to put his hands and my well formed protest would evaporate, becoming extraterrestrial to my mind.

I tried to have all serious conversations at a distance.  Even the phone would become one of his tools of manipulation and control.
Inevitably, I'd find myself touching myself simply from feeling the gravel in his voice and remembering what it felt like with breath pouring across my neck
as he'd beckon me
as he'd implore me
as he'd command me to do his bidding.
Thing is,
he never even had to say anything.
Just look at me and I would know exactly what and how we were about to do things.

In person,
I couldn't resist him.
On the phone,
he tortured my imagination with unwilling reminisces about the countless times shared between us.

I had to find a way to talk to him without talking.

Text or email would be the only way I could fortify myself when I had something of import to say to him.

Whether he'd memorized the map of pleasure he'd inked in kisses along my body over time
or
if he was still discovering new ways to make me pant did not matter.
This time,
I would hold strong and speak to him in a font that conveyed my seriousness.
I would stray from the flowery language he'd make me spout.
My tongue would be leaden and expository instead of made from cotton candy and metaphor.
I would not exhale poetry during this conversation.
I would not sweat verse.
If he answered correctly,
if he took the silly girl seriously,
then we'd resume our irregular existence in the never never land we created amidst the soft fabric of high thread counts.

I wanted to know
I needed to know.

#9311 JUST friends

We were
JUST friends,
but that didn't dull the sting,
not even a little bit.

You left.

I was celebrating and hadn't even planned on seeing you.
I'd put all thoughts of you
and what I really wanted from you
out of my mind.

Somehow,
you manifested
and
you
just
being
there
tortured
me.

Being just close enough,
but somehow not close enough.

Right then,
I wanted you more than I wanted wealth.
Right then,
I wanted you more than I wanted fame.
Right then,
I wanted you more than I wanted to be free.
Why would I want freedom when I could be bound to you?
Why would I want freedom when I could be braiding my limbs to you?

You rested your hand
                  your hands
on my body....

Through my dress,
I wanted every single one of those digits to memorize every single piece of me.
Through my dress,
your fingertips burned into my skin the words you pretended not to want to say.

But you were leaving shortly.

You were leaving the event
                 leaving our unspoken conversation
                 leaving me
your friend
to go and see another.

You didn't say it.
I could read it in the pain of your expression
I could read it in the way you said
you had to go

as if waiting for me to give you a reason to stay.

I couldn't say what I was thinking.
After all,
We were JUST friends.
I couldn't say to you
She's not me
Isn't
Won't be
Can't be
All you need and want

She has you tonight when I want you
She has you tonight when I danced with you
for the second time
She has you tonight when
I've put an hour's extra effort into how I look
                                                     how I smell
                                                     how I feel
All for you
All to let you know I hear what you're thinking.
Yet,
You left me to go and see her
Whoever she is doesn't matter.
She's not me.

Isn't
Won't be
Can't be
All you need and want

I shouldn't care.
We're JUST supposed to be
JUST friends
I'm on one tonight.
I'm killing it tonight.
I'm serving tonight.

                              serving lipslegsandlashes tonight
I caught you staring at my lipslegsandlashes
I want those fingers on my lipslegsandlashes

The fact that those fingers won't know me tonight,
intimately
won't touch me in the morning like J Cole said
won't make me grateful for waiting
ALL THIS TIME
for you
won't make me gasp as if on the place I touch real late when all alone and call your name
because of course,
we're JUST friends
Neither of us wants this.
You know as well as I do
If your eyes hadn't told on you,
your hands certainly did
those hands that didn't fight my hem as my moves made it move dangerously north
those hands that rested far too low on my curves
those hands that burned intentions through my dress as you pulled me too close

It was late
and so you left
                  left the event
                  left our unspoken conversation
                  left me
JUST your friend
to go and see another.
You didn't say it
I could read it in the pain of your expression
I could read it in the way you said
you had to go.

I tried dancing with others, but their hands felt clumsy
I tried dancing with others, but they told me to put my phone away.
I kept it close in case you changed your mind
I watched the door in case you changed your mind
in case you realized what I already know

You deserve better
You could do better
I promise
I'm better
